E C Media is planning to hit the Indian market through its new e-book reader “Wink”. Wink is a six inch screen with a resolution of 800×600 pixels. It weighs 260g with battery. It is planning to release a nine inch screen which will be 1024×768-pixel resolution and will weigh 430g.E reader Wink comes with 16 shade grayscale screen. This unique e reader is loaded with QWERTY keyboard. There is a text to speech (TTS) support for English. The user has the options of searching and highlighting and the font size and color can be changed. Wink has strong Digital content both in terms of books as well as journals.The data connectivity is supported with GPRS and Wi Fi.It is powered with 3 G network with touch screen model. The browser helps the user to connect with world through email and website. Wink entertains its users through games and Audio Listener (mp3).The users are given the facility for developing applications like Games, mobile banking, UI customization, etc.

The main competitors for Wink are the Amazon’s ‘Kindle 3’ which is 20% faster and 21% smaller than the original kindle. Another competitor is the e-reader Pi. It costs INR 10,000.It can read Indian languages like Sanskrit and Hindi. This e reader provides 15 regional languages. The technology support will be provided by California Software Co. Ltd which is a Chennai based technology outsourcing company. EC Media (International) Pvt. Ltd, a Bangalore-based company was working from the past 1 year to launch this device. The e-book readers are slowly gaining momentum in our country.

The six-inch screen of Wink will be priced at Rs 8,000, while the nine-inch advanced version will cost Rs 22,000.The price of 6 inch Wink is cheaper.Though Pi is costly it has hit the market by selling thousands of copies.

EC Media and the parent company DC books have many tie ups like with Ingram, a US-based digital aggregator or warehouse, and has access to at least 100,000 titles from various publishers. It has tied up with publishers like Penguin, Roli and Oxford University Press to upload titles on Wink’s portal. Permanent Black a New Delhi based publishing company has joined hands with EC Media.
