Liberalisation opened up the Indian market for rapid growth in the mobile industry. Mobile subscriber base stands at a staggering 600 million and more, it is increasing by an average of more than 50 million every month.  Naturally it got reflected in the mobile handset sector too. The Indian mobile handset market, that was led by few players like Nokia, Samsung, Motorola are now crowded with handset manufacturers, both from abroad and India too. In earlier days global brands were just pushing their handsets to the Indian market and not every consumer could afford to buy the handsets. But soon many companies realised that average mid and low end Indian consumers are yet to be tapped and they launched handsets targeting these segments. For the Indian customers price is the major factor, while buying any electronic product including mobile.Handset market in India is now highly competitive. New players are entering the market with rich features, low cost gadgets and dual SIM features. Still the largest handset manufacturer Nokia has grabbed most of the market share (56.8%) which is followed by the Korean companies Samsung (7.7%) and LG (5.4%) last year. However Micromax a new entrant is competing with LG to gain third position in the handset market. Talking about the statistics, about 26 new players entered the market in the past few months itself. The Indian brands gained 14% market share in the handset industry, in particular in the mid and low end consumer market. Smart phones are gaining momentum and it is assumed to rise by 14% within 2-3 years. The GSM handsets are on higher demand compared to CDMA. Around 80% of the mobile services revenue is generated through SMS. More than 94% Indian consumer are prepaid. We have seen some interesting trends like dual SIM models, solar powered mobiles from Samsung and even desi smartfones from players like Airfone.

The Indian manufacturers are now getting ready to hit the other countries after consolidating their presence in India. Indian mobile companies like Micromax, and  Videocon are planning to enter the global markets especially in the Indian and African regions. Micromax has already a major market share in the Srilankan market. The Indian market is still waiting for many more players to come. One such player is Singapore based Pine mobile and Huawei.  The competition is going to be intense in the coming years as the early entrants are threatened by new national and international players.
